Fun Facts

The Byodo-In Temple in Kaneohe is a smaller-scale replica of the over 950-year-old Byodoin Temple in Uji, Japan, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The temple was constructed in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii.

Unlike many temples, the Byodo-In Temple is non-denominational and welcomes people of all faiths to worship and meditate.

The temple houses a 3-ton brass bell called a bon-sho, which is customarily rung before entering to purify the mind of evil spirits and temptation.

The temple is set against the lush backdrop of the Ko'olau Mountains and is surrounded by koi ponds and Japanese gardens, offering a peaceful retreat.

The temple has been featured in several television shows and movies, including 'Hawaii Five-O' and 'Lost.'
