In 1795, King Kamehameha I won the Battle of Nuʻuanu here, uniting the Hawaiian Islands under his rule after warriors were driven off the cliff.
In Hawaiian, 'Pali' means 'cliff,' aptly describing the dramatic landscape of the lookout.
The winds at the lookout can be so powerful that they have been known to lift people off their feet.
From the lookout, you can see Kaneohe, Kailua, and the lush Koolau Mountains, providing a breathtaking vista.
The lookout is located within the Nuʻuanu Pali State Wayside, which is managed by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources.
The Pali Highway, which leads to the lookout, was completed in 1959 and replaced the old Pali Road, which was built in 1845.
The area is home to native Hawaiian birds such as the 'Apapane and 'I'iwi, which can often be seen flitting among the trees.
