Fun Facts

The mooring quay is part of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, honoring the lives lost during the attack on December 7, 1941.

The quays were used to dock battleships, including the USS Arizona, which was tragically sunk during the attack, resulting in the loss of 1,177 crew members.

Known as the 'tears of the Arizona,' small amounts of oil continue to seep from the wreckage, symbolizing the enduring memory of the tragedy.

The memorial, which spans the sunken battleship, was designed by architect Alfred Preis and symbolizes both the initial defeat and ultimate victory in World War II.

One of the ship's original bells is housed at the University of Arizona and is rung during special occasions and ceremonies.

Commissioned in 1916, the USS Arizona was a Pennsylvania-class battleship that served in both World War I and World War II before its destruction at Pearl Harbor.

Visitors must take a short boat ride from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center to reach the memorial, which is managed by the National Park Service.

Many of the survivors chose to have their ashes interred with their fallen shipmates aboard the sunken battleship.
