Fun Facts

Built in 1902, the Dutch Windmill was designed to pump water for Golden Gate Park, and at the time, it was the largest windmill in the world.

After falling into disrepair, the windmill was restored in the 1980s, thanks to the efforts of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and the Dutch community.

There is a second windmill, the Murphy Windmill, located nearby, which was built in 1905 and is slightly larger than the Dutch Windmill.

The Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden, named after the former Dutch queen, surrounds the windmill and blooms with vibrant tulips each spring.

The windmill was a gift to San Francisco from the Dutch community to commemorate the city's Dutch heritage and to enhance the park's irrigation system.

The windmill features traditional Dutch design elements, including a thatched roof and wooden sails, making it a picturesque landmark in the park.
