Fun Facts

Lora Josephine Knight, the original owner, was so captivated by the architecture of Scandinavia that she decided to replicate it in her summer home, Vikingsholm, completed in 1929.

The castle was built using local materials, including granite boulders from the surrounding area and hand-hewn timbers, to ensure it blended seamlessly with the natural landscape.

In keeping with Scandinavian tradition, the roof of Vikingsholm is covered with sod, which helps insulate the building and integrates it with its forested surroundings.

Vikingsholm is located at the head of Emerald Bay, a National Natural Landmark, known for its stunning natural beauty and historical significance.

The castle was originally part of a 239-acre estate that included the entire head of Emerald Bay, which was later donated to the state of California.

The interior of Vikingsholm features intricate wood carvings and hand-painted ceilings, reflecting the craftsmanship of Scandinavian artisans.

Visitors can explore the castle through guided tours, which are available during the summer months, offering insights into its history and architecture.
