The gatehouse was initially part of the entrance to the Capitol grounds but was moved to its current location in 1880 to accommodate the expansion of the Capitol building.
The gatehouse was designed by Charles Bulfinch, a prominent American architect known for his work on the Massachusetts State House.
There is a matching gatehouse located on the east side of the Capitol, both serving as historical markers of the original Capitol grounds.
The gatehouse is constructed from Aquia Creek sandstone, the same material used for the original Capitol building.
The gatehouse is designed in the Federal style, characterized by its symmetry and classic proportions.
