Fun Facts

The Big Room in Carlsbad Caverns is a natural limestone chamber that spans 8.2 acres, making it the largest single cave chamber by volume in North America.

The Main Corridor descends about 750 feet below the surface, leading visitors through a stunning array of stalactites and stalagmites.

Unlike many limestone caves formed by water erosion, Carlsbad Caverns were created by sulfuric acid dissolving the surrounding limestone.

Every evening from late spring to early fall, thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats exit the cave at dusk in a spectacular flight.

In 1995, Carlsbad Caverns was recognized for its outstanding geological formations and unique cave ecosystem.

The park is home to over 119 known caves, with Carlsbad Cavern being the most famous.

Evidence suggests that Native Americans explored the caves long before modern discovery, as indicated by artifacts found in the area.

The caverns feature rare formations like helictites, which grow in all directions, defying gravity.
