Fun Facts

The site was inspired by Kevin Costner, who wanted to honor the history of the bison and Native American culture after filming 'Dances with Wolves' in South Dakota.

There are 17 life-size bronze bison sculptures at the site, created by artist Peggy Detmers.

Tatanka Story of Bison offers exhibits and presentations that educate visitors about the historical significance of bison to the Plains Indians.

'Tatanka' is the Lakota word for bison, reflecting the cultural importance of the animal to the Lakota people.

The visitor center at Tatanka is designed to resemble a traditional Native American earth lodge, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

Historically, an estimated 30 to 60 million bison roamed North America before their numbers drastically declined in the 19th century.
