It Started With Sandwiches The Sushi Deli story began in San Diego in 1983 as a sandwich shop. Sushi gradually became the focus, beginning a local restaurant story that has now lasted more than four decades.
San Diego Gave It Its Own Day For Sushi Deli’s 40th anniversary in 2023, the City of San Diego officially proclaimed September 12 “Sushi Deli Day.” That is quite an honor for a business that started as a small sandwich shop.
Three Generations of Sushi Deli The “3” in Sushi Deli 3 has a simple explanation: it was the third Sushi Deli location, following Sushi Deli 1 and Sushi Deli 2. By 2012, all three were operating in San Diego.
Sushi With a San Diego Accent Sushi Deli describes its cooking as “Japanese Favorites • So-Cal Flavors.” Look through the menu and you will see California ingredients and combinations alongside traditional Japanese choices.
The Crowd Arrived Early Sushi Deli 3 was already drawing serious crowds more than a decade ago. In 2014, the San Diego Reader reported arriving for dinner to find a sizable line waiting before the doors opened.
One Turn From Convoy Sushi Deli 3 sits on Armour Street, just off Convoy, in an area the San Diego Reader once described as an industrial pocket between Highway 163 and Convoy Street. Its unlikely setting became part of its local character.
More Than Rolls The menu stretches well beyond sushi rolls. Sushi Deli 3 also serves nigiri, sashimi, poke, ramen, udon, rice dishes and Japanese appetizers, making the enormous menu part of the experience.
