The attraction was initially named Soarin' Over California when it first opened in 2001, showcasing scenic views exclusively from California before expanding to global vistas in 2016.
The ride uses a mechanical lift system that elevates guests into a dome screen, combined with wind, sound, and scent effects to create an immersive flying experience.
The ride takes guests on a virtual journey to iconic locations such as the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower, and the Sydney Opera House, among others.
The entire experience, including the pre-show, lasts approximately 10 minutes, with the flight simulation itself being around 5 minutes long.
The score for Soarin' Around the World was composed by Bruce Broughton, who incorporated elements of the original Soarin' Over California theme by Jerry Goldsmith.
The attraction uses scent technology to enhance the experience, with smells like fresh grass, ocean spray, and jasmine accompanying the visuals.
Imagineer Mark Sumner designed the ride system using an Erector Set model to demonstrate the concept of the ride's unique lifting mechanism.
Each ride cycle can accommodate up to 87 guests, spread across three rows of seats.
