Riley Plaza was originally the site of the Salem Depot, a major train station that connected Salem to Boston and other parts of New England until it was demolished in the 1950s.
The plaza is situated near the site of the Great Salem Fire of 1914, which destroyed over 1,300 buildings and reshaped the city's landscape.
Every year, Riley Plaza is part of the route for the Haunted Happenings Grand Parade, a highlight of Salem's month-long Halloween festivities.
The plaza features rotating public art installations that reflect Salem's rich cultural and historical heritage.
Located centrally, Riley Plaza provides easy access to several of Salem's historic landmarks, including the Salem Witch Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum.
