Fun Facts

Pu'u Kukui receives an average annual rainfall of over 400 inches, making it one of the wettest places on the planet.

The Pu'u Kukui Watershed Preserve, established in 1988, spans over 8,600 acres and is managed by the Maui Land & Pineapple Company to protect the area's unique ecosystem.

The preserve hosts numerous endemic plant species, including the rare Hawaiian lobelioids, which are found nowhere else in the world.

Pu'u Kukui is the highest peak of the West Maui Mountains, which are remnants of a dormant shield volcano that last erupted approximately 320,000 years ago.

The watershed's dense vegetation and high rainfall contribute significantly to the island's freshwater resources, supporting both natural habitats and human needs.

Due to its ecological sensitivity and the need for conservation, access to Pu'u Kukui is restricted, with entry permitted only for research and conservation purposes.
