The Peace Pagoda was presented to San Francisco by its sister city, Osaka, Japan, in 1968 as a symbol of peace and friendship.
The structure was designed by Japanese architect Yoshiro Taniguchi and features a five-tiered concrete tower, reflecting traditional Japanese pagoda architecture.
It is located in the Japan Center, which was developed to preserve and promote Japanese culture in San Francisco.
The five tiers of the pagoda symbolize the five elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and void, which are fundamental in Buddhist philosophy.
The site hosts various cultural festivals and events throughout the year, celebrating Japanese traditions and community.
It stands prominently in the heart of Japantown, one of only three remaining Japantowns in the United States.
