Fun Facts

Standing at 2,250 feet, the Painted Wall in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is the highest cliff in Colorado, towering even above the Empire State Building.

The name comes from the striking patterns of light-colored pegmatite dikes that streak across the dark rock face, resembling a giant abstract painting.

The cliff is composed of Precambrian gneiss and schist, which are over 1.7 billion years old.

The cliff was carved by the Gunnison River over millions of years, creating the dramatic vertical drop we see today.

Despite its daunting height, the wall attracts experienced climbers who are drawn to its challenging routes and breathtaking views.

The area is home to diverse wildlife, including peregrine falcons that nest on the cliff ledges.
