When it was completed in 1892, the Old Capitol Building was the tallest structure in Washington, standing at 130 feet tall.
The building is designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, characterized by its robust and rustic appearance with heavy stone and rounded arches.
Originally, it served as the Thurston County Courthouse before becoming the state capitol building in 1905.
In 1928, a fire severely damaged the building, but it was restored and continued to serve as a government building.
Today, it is home to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for Washington State.
The clock tower, a prominent feature of the building, was added during the 1928 restoration after the fire.
The Old Capitol Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its historical and architectural significance.
