Fun Facts

When it was completed in 1977, the New River Gorge Bridge held the record for the longest single-span arch bridge in the world, stretching 1,700 feet across the gorge.

Every third Saturday in October, Bridge Day is celebrated, allowing visitors to walk across the bridge and watch BASE jumpers leap from its 876-foot height.

In 2005, the bridge was depicted on the West Virginia state quarter as part of the U.S. Mint's 50 State Quarters Program.

The bridge's construction required innovative techniques, including the use of a cableway system to transport materials across the gorge.

The bridge is located within the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, which was designated as a national park in 2020.

Before the bridge was built, crossing the gorge required a 40-minute drive down narrow mountain roads, which was reduced to less than a minute with the bridge's completion.

The bridge offers stunning views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains and the New River, making it a favorite subject for photographers.
