Fun Facts

The Bull Buck Tree, located in Nelder Grove, is one of the largest giant sequoias by volume, standing at 246 feet tall and estimated to be over 2,700 years old.

Nelder Grove was named after John A. Nelder, a miner and naturalist who lived in the area in the late 19th century and was a friend of the famous naturalist John Muir.

In the late 1800s, Nelder Grove was logged for its giant sequoias, but conservation efforts have since preserved the remaining trees.

The area is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare plant species and various wildlife such as black bears and mule deer.

The Shadow of the Giants Trail is a popular 1.1-mile loop that allows visitors to walk among the ancient sequoias and enjoy the tranquility of the forest.
