Fun Facts

The monument is home to the Betatakin, Keet Seel, and Inscription House ruins, which were inhabited by the Ancestral Puebloans over 700 years ago.

The dwellings were built using sandstone blocks and mud mortar, strategically nestled into alcoves to protect them from the elements.

It comprises three separate sites: Betatakin, Keet Seel, and Inscription House, each with its own distinct history and architecture.

Keet Seel is accessible only by a guided hike, which is about 17 miles round trip, ensuring its preservation and protection.

The area is considered sacred by the Navajo Nation, and they play a crucial role in its preservation and interpretation.

The Ancestral Puebloans adapted to the arid climate by developing advanced agricultural techniques, including the use of check dams and terraces.

Visitors can enjoy scenic hiking trails that provide stunning views of the surrounding canyons and mesas.
