Fun Facts

Unveiled in 1872, this monument was among the earliest in the nation dedicated to Civil War veterans.

The monument features allegorical figures representing Victory, Union, Emancipation, History, and the Navy, symbolizing various aspects of the Civil War.

The monument was designed by Randolph Rogers, a renowned sculptor who was born in Waterloo, New York, and studied in Italy.

Originally located at the intersection of Woodward Avenue and Fort Street, the monument was moved to Campus Martius Park in 2005 to accommodate urban development.

A time capsule was placed within the monument during its 2005 restoration, intended to be opened in 2105.
