Fun Facts

Unlike other Hawaiian royals who are interred at the Royal Mausoleum at Mauna ʻAla, King Lunalilo chose to be buried separately at Kawaiahaʻo Church, fulfilling his wish to be among the people.

King Lunalilo reigned for just over a year, from January 8, 1873, until his death on February 3, 1874.

The mausoleum's construction utilized coral stone, a common building material in Hawaii during the 19th century, reflecting the architectural practices of the time.

He earned this nickname due to his democratic approach, including being the first Hawaiian monarch elected by popular vote.

The mausoleum is situated on the grounds of Kawaiahaʻo Church, often referred to as the 'Westminster Abbey of Hawaii,' due to its historical significance.
