The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America, with some reaching heights of over 750 feet.
The sand dunes began forming around 440,000 years ago, making them a fascinating geological feature of ancient origin.
The park encompasses not only the dunes but also grasslands, wetlands, conifer and aspen forests, alpine lakes, and tundra.
The dunes can produce a humming sound when the sand slides down the slopes, a phenomenon known as 'singing sand.'
The dunes were formed from sand and sediment left behind by a large lake that once covered the San Luis Valley.
Medano Creek, a seasonal stream, flows at the base of the dunes and disappears into the sand, creating a unique beach-like environment.
The park is designated as an International Dark Sky Park, offering stunning views of the night sky free from light pollution.
The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, elk, black bears, and over 250 species of birds.
