Fun Facts

The Castolon Visitor Center is located in the historic La Harmonia Store, which dates back to 1921 and served as a trading post for the local community.

The area around Castolon was historically a melting pot of Mexican, Anglo, and Native American cultures, which is reflected in its architecture and local history.

During the Mexican Revolution, the U.S. Army established Camp Santa Helena near Castolon to monitor border activity and protect the area.

In 2019, a wildfire caused significant damage to the Castolon Historic District, including the destruction of the historic barracks building.

The area was once a thriving agricultural community, with farmers growing cotton, corn, and other crops using the waters of the Rio Grande.

Castolon played a crucial role in the development of Big Bend National Park, serving as a hub for early settlers and park rangers.
