Opened in 1903, it was the first public library in Washington D.C., funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.
The library is designed in the Beaux-Arts style, characterized by its grand and elaborate architectural details.
In 2019, the library became home to the Apple Carnegie Library and the DC History Center, a part of the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., which collaborates with the Smithsonian.
During World War I, the library served as a place for soldiers to read and write letters home.
The library was closed for several years for a $30 million renovation, reopening in 2019 with modern amenities while preserving its historical architecture.
