Fun Facts

Every summer evening, thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats emerge from the caverns in a spectacular flight, a natural phenomenon that visitors can witness from the amphitheater near the entrance.

The Big Room, the largest chamber in Carlsbad Caverns, is about 4,000 feet long, 625 feet wide, and 255 feet high, making it one of the largest underground chambers in North America.

In 1898, a 16-year-old cowboy named Jim White discovered the caverns when he saw what he thought was smoke, which turned out to be a massive bat flight.

The caverns are home to a variety of stunning speleothems, including stalactites, stalagmites, and the rare 'soda straw' formations, which are delicate, hollow tubes.

Native American artifacts found in the area suggest that humans have been exploring the caverns for thousands of years, long before modern discovery.

The visitor center is located at an elevation of 4,406 feet, offering a unique perspective on the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert landscape.

In 1995, the caverns were designated as a World Heritage Site due to their exceptional natural beauty and geological significance.

Apart from bats, the park is home to a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, javelinas, and over 300 species of birds.
