Theodore Roosevelt NP, North Dakota
Claim this place to tell your story your way.
The site features large, spherical rock formations known as cannonball concretions, which are naturally occurring and formed over millions of years through the gradual accumulation of mineral layers around a core.
The name comes from their striking resemblance to cannonballs, with some of these formations reaching up to 10 feet in diameter.
This area is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and offers visitors a chance to explore the unique landscapes of the North Dakota Badlands.
Geologists study these formations to understand sedimentary rock processes and the environmental conditions that existed when they formed.
Located along the scenic Highway 85, visitors can stop by and view these fascinating formations without a strenuous hike.
