The Cades Cove Loop Road is an 11-mile, one-way loop that offers visitors a scenic drive through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, showcasing the area's natural beauty and historical structures.
Visitors often spot white-tailed deer, black bears, and wild turkeys along the loop, making it a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
Before becoming part of the national park, Cades Cove was home to a small community of settlers who farmed the land and built churches, some of which still stand today.
The loop features several preserved historical buildings, including log cabins, barns, and churches, offering a glimpse into 19th-century Appalachian life.
To provide a more peaceful experience, the loop is closed to motor vehicles on Wednesdays from May through September, allowing cyclists and pedestrians to enjoy the road.
Built in 1827, the Primitive Baptist Church is one of the oldest structures in Cades Cove and was a central part of the community's spiritual life.
Several trailheads, including the popular Abrams Falls Trail, are accessible from the loop, providing opportunities for hiking and exploring the surrounding wilderness.
