The 14th Brooklyn, also known as the 14th New York State Militia, was one of the key regiments in the Union Army during the Battle of Antietam, which took place in Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862.
The regiment was known for its distinctive red trousers and blue jackets, which made them easily recognizable on the battlefield.
Beyond Antietam, the regiment also fought in battles such as Bull Run, Gettysburg, and Fredericksburg, earning a reputation for bravery and resilience.
The regiment's nickname, "The Red-Legged Devils," inspired the name of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team, originally known as the "Trolley Dodgers."
Although not officially part of the Iron Brigade, the 14th Brooklyn often fought alongside them and shared their reputation for toughness and tenacity.
